5 Promises Every Living Marketer
Should Make to Themselves 4th
Jan’13.
Marketers
have the ability to connect to our customers in real-time, and understand them
on a unprecedented level. We have the ability to send out complex information
in formats that make it easy to consume and understand. It’s time to break the
bonds, make some new promises, and move forward.
1 – I will not make statements the
brand can’t live up to: Make realistic
statements & improve your product/service so that you deliver on your
promises.
2 – I will not view my customers as
simply a means to an end: Social media is helping
to ‘humanize’ business, so Marketers need to humanize along with it by adding
relationships.
3 – I will not pretend
that ‘there is no ROI’ of social communications: Everything you do have
an impact, good or bad, that can be measured. It cannot always be measured in
dollars or cents. The ROI can be saving customer time, new product development
ideas.
4 – I will not brag
about meaningless metrics: Adding some context to your metrics, and
then actually become worth talking about. “Because of X, we achieved Y, which
led to Z.”
5 – I will not ignore how people feel about
typical marketing actions: Make the commitment to yourself to stop
doing things that people hate, and do more of what people love.

Google's Motorola Mobility
Withdraws Patent Claims against Microsoft 9th Jan’13
Google owned Motorola Mobility filed a motion Tuesday with the
U.S International Trade Commission to withdraw two patents that were part
of a patent-violation claim against Microsoft. The search giant owns the two
standards-essential patents, called "the H.264 patents,"
since acquiring Motorola last May. Dropping the claims means that Google
is no longer stopping Microsoft from using video-compression technology on
Xbox. Microsoft wants to license the H.264 patents, but refuses to comply
with Google's proposed demands for compensation, which software giant has said
is not anything remotely close to a reasonable price.
In February, Microsoft
accused Motorola of breaching commitments that it and other companies had
previously made to support industry standards, namely, if they had any patents
essential to the standards, they would make their patents available on fair and
reasonable terms, and would not use them to block competitors from shipping
their products. Despite withdrawing two patents, Google is still contesting one
that is not part of an industry standard
12 Retail Industry Trends For 2013 7th
Jan’13.
It
talks about customer buying behaviour and the pattern followed by customers
when buying products. Consumers are thrifty and don’t waste money on unwanted
products. When buying products, price gains importance and not value,
especially when it comes to better made apparel and luxury goods. Customers are
more prepared and research well about the product and other products of
different brands that they want to purchase .
Retail
stores are no longer filled to the brim. Customers are easily distracted with
too many choices. People are also moving towards renting products and services
rather than owning them, as long as they can use it to justify their money.
Products advertised at unconventional places may win the customer’s heart and a
marketer has to capture this market and use the customer’s disposable income
which will be spent on spontaneous purchases.
When data is provided to customers about products, It should
be as it is necessary for the customer to make a decision. A retail store
designed to work on eight employees but reduced to a skeleton crew tosses your
customer service into the garbage while theft from both inside and outside
increases. Customers are coming in with blinders on. Technology, both in-hand
and in ears. You must find a way to break through the electronic wall customers
are accessing as they walk through your store.
Associates need to build rapport quickly with these customers who have
blinders on.
Apple Looking At Releasing A Cheaper iPhone
This Year
January 9, 2013
“Apple” the name itself has positioned and appreciated
for its premium quality products since years but wait a second, here is
something you wont believe, Apple releasing a cheaper iPhone this year. The
news has not been confirmed by Apple but there have been persistent rumors in
American publications, including the Wall Street Journal.
Unnamed sources
who have been contacted by these publications are saying that the cheaper
iPhone will be released in the second half of this year and will have less
expensive parts like a polycarbonate plastic casing shell for example. The
screen size will be more or less the same size as the previous iPhones.
However, the report has noted that Apple could decide not to move ahead with
it.
. But the
report does make sense when you see the massive rise in its competitors like
Android. Android has become the dominant mobile OS since last year and Apple
probably sees very laid back. A small example would be that of Facebook
focusing more on its Android offerings since they see a huge user base on that
platform compared to iOS .A big thing to worry for APPLE. One of the reasons
for Android’s virulent growth is the open ecosystem it espouses which lets it
power all kinds phones in all kinds of market segments and pricing ranges. Apple
has a closed ecosystem which is limited to its products only. Could it be that
Apple is having problems with this? A cheaper iPhone would definitely drive up
their sales and adoption in India where the iPhone is synonymous with cool and
if priced properly could see greater sales than at present.
How would this
new device affect the Apple brand? We are not entirely sure but I think it
might lower Apple’s elite position among smartphone manufacturers. On a final
note I think it is a good but risky step for Apple if it wants to increase the
adoption of its mobile OS and ecosystem.
