Synopsis of the episode (Beyond Logo):
• The
article talks about the Indian consumer and the radical changes and evolvement
in consumption post liberalization.
• Great
consumer insights is a must for effective brand building and for that analyzing
consumers and their needs and pain points is vital.
• The Indian
consumer in the 80s was like a grown up child trapped in the parent’s home.
Today it is like an adolescent – curious, excited and ready to experiment thus
explaining the surge in consumerism.
• Bollywood
is an interesting mirror for culture reflecting in our society. For example,
Bunty and Babli : Abhishek refusing his dad’s boring job which is neither fun
nor respectable.
Consumerism and materialism is a part of our
Indianness.
• 1991
unshackled India and ironically we went back to our roots…back to mythology.
Today we have become less austere and conservative and more competitive,
acquitive and optimistic.
• Most
brands in India are targeting the TG from 25 to 45. India is a market of middle
aged teenagers due to increased choice and disposable income. The TG on either
ends is large yet often neglected which is a mistake. The partition generation thinks and acts
differently from the ‘No strings’ generation who were born in the era where
there was no doordarshan. Kesari Travels’ strategy of starting tours for senior
citizens called ‘2nd innings’ is a huge success and hence a good reminder that
this is an important TG.
• Requirement
of higher aesthetics is a change deeply penetrated. For example Asian Paints
changes from pain your walls to home décor. Bru coffee is not just coffee but
about an experience. Bru café is a manifestation of the same.
• Traditional
market research can tell you only so much. It is important to change ways to
understand what motivates the consumer today for stronger insights. Focus
groups are very important. Living with the consumers is a new trend. If you want to know about the youth, talk to
the teachers rather than the students themselves which is a more traditional
way.
